Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Students,

I am hoping that you have been enjoying these last lazy days of summer and maybe even reading some good books. Word through the grapevine is that there is some confusion regarding the summer reading assignment.  Please read about the requirement and extra credit opportunity below. 

REQUIRED READING (both books below): 

1. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin 

Sixteen game players, heirs to Sam Westing's fabulous fortune, are all suspected of his murder. This book is part mystery story, part play-along game, and part do-it-yourself puzzle. Mystery 750L

2. Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai                                                                                                                 

This book is written in short verse poems about life in Vietnam and this family’s immigration journey, including the foods, clothing, traditions, the encroaching war, some politics, family structure, and more. 

Historical Fiction 800L

Parents will need to verify that you read by completing a verification form I will be sending home at the beginning of the school year.

EXTRA CREDIT: (NOT required)

You may read an additional 2 books of your choice in the Lexile range of 770-1100 and complete one of the following on any or all of the four books (the 2 required, and the 2 choice):

·Draw a picture of a scene or a character from the book of your choice, use color

·Create a digital ad for one of the books.  The ad can be a static poster ad or a movie ad with sound and movement.

Earning the extra credit is very simple. You will receive 3 extra credit points for every book read and assignment fulfilled. A total of 12 points can be earned and banked. The points may be added to ELA tests or quizzes during the school year. 

Reading of required books should be completed by 8/8/18.  

Extra credit assignments are due by 8/15/18.
